The Warm Audio WA273 Microphone Preamp recreates the traditional British sound of the 1073 preamp with current features and durability. The WA273 has transformer-balanced inputs and outputs, a discrete signal route, and 80db gain. The WA273 channels include switchable input impedance (1200 or 300 ohms) and high-pass filters. Each channel has front-panel DI inputs to directly plug in instruments and amplify their signals.

Capacitors & Signal Path

An important part of classic British tone not often discussed are the different styles of capacitors and output transistor used in ’73-style circuits. We found it important to maintain integrity to early British designs by using tantalum and polystyrene capacitors in the signal path and an output transistor choice that is much smoother in the high gain settings than what is typically found in modern ’73-style preamps.

 

Hand Wired & Hand Assembled

The WA273 is hand-wired, just like classic ’73-style preamps often were. Gurus claim that the hand-wired nature of the build contributes to a portion of the sought after classic British tone. They hand-wire and hand-assemble the WA273, including populating all the PCB components by hand.

A vital, yet not oft discussed component of these classic British circuits is the different types of capacitors and output transistors used.
