Description

The damaru is a traditional percussion instrument widely used in Nepal. This little, two-headed drum resembles an hourglass. The drum heads are usually animal hide, and the bodies are hollowed-out wood or gourd.

Construction distinguishes the damaru. Two drumheads are connected by a cable across the drum’s centre. This wire is twisted, and the drum is swiftly moved in a circular manner to produce a rhythmic, resonant sound. Changing the drum’s pace and direction changes the sound’s tempo and pitch.

Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, and other traditions value the damaru. It is widely used in spiritual ceremonies and is said to symbolise the cosmic sound that created the cosmos.

The damaru adds a particular percussion element to Nepali folk music and cultural events, accompanying traditional dances and singing.
