Description
The new Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio 4K8 is a professional live production switcher built into a broadcast control panel so it can be used for high end work while being extremely portable. This means customers can use it in small venues that don’t have the access for equipment racks or broadcast vans. Customers get a powerful switcher with 8 standards converted 12G-SDI inputs, 10 x 12G-SDI aux outputs, 4 chroma keyers, 2 downstream keyers, SuperSource, 2 media players and lots of transitions. Plus it includes a whole television studio of features such as hardware streaming, recording, audio mixer, talkback, multiview and optional internal network shared storage.
The ATEM Television Studio combines a switcher and control panel into the same unit, so it’s extremely portable. The front panel includes buttons for selecting sources, triggering transitions and setting up video effects. Plus the buttons are the same high-end type used on expensive broadcast switchers. Customers also get a built in t-bar for manual transition control. The front panel even has an innovative audio mixer control area with live metering on a dedicated LCD.

All the connections you need
The HD8’s back panel seems complicated, yet it houses almost every field connector. Eight 3G-SDI inputs/outputs with integrated audio let you connect eight video cameras. Aux outputs, SDI and HDMI/SDI Multiview connectors, and a Main SDI Program Outfit allow projector use, multi-source monitoring, and easier feed recording and transfer. Audio connectors are many! Control room monitoring, studio speakers, talkback/headset connection, hi-fi stereo gear-to-music synchronization, analog mixing, and more are available.
The left rear panel has a Talkback extension connection for use with Clear-Com and RTS systems. Serial Remote control, a 4-port Ethernet bank for computer and internet connections, Timecode inputs and outputs, and MADI Audio microphone extensions are provided. Dual USB-C connectors allow USB flash drive recording and phone streaming. There are inputs/outputs, a 4-pin 12V power connector, and a standard IEC 100-240V AC power connection for easily synchronizing to broadcast systems and using DC power.

Broadcast entirely on your terms
The HD8’s control layout tells a similar tale of complexity and comprehension. Starting in the center at the top of the panel, just to the right of the status display screen, a series of buttons let you adjust program settings for all features across the switcher. To the right of the screen is a numeric keypad, allowing users to enter appropriate parameters for the effect at hand, including transition duration and more.
Moving to the left, an audio control module gives you total control over leveling and processing for each camera source in your feed, with selection controls for speakers and headsets just above the meters. Below the audio section are bus selections for setting inputs to processing for keyers and DVEs. In the bottom left corner are program and preview buttons, allowing you to double-check footage before immediately outputting the result.
Your visual effects command center is in the bottom right corner of the HD8. Here, you’ll find a transition controller for applying to your captured feed once it’s ready to be sent on the air. Beside it to the right is a sizeable T-bar fader that allows users to manually control the selected transition at hand. For green screen keys, on-screen graphics, and post-transition graphic cueing, dedicated button grids wait on standby to deliver precisely what you need at just the right time. And finally, a nearby fade-to-black switch allows you to end the show with a classic fade-out!
Built-in Fairlight audio mixer
The HD8’s Fairlight audio mixer levels and shapes signals for flawless broadcasts. Adjust a parametric EQ, compressor, limiter, expander, noise gate, and panning controls to get the sound you want, then set video feeds to “audio-follow-video.” The HD8’s control panel and ATEM Software Control application allow remote customization.
What would a professional switcher and control panel be without great effects? Start with transitions as there are many! Fade, Dip, Wipe, DVE Push/Squeeze, and Graphic Wipe are some of our favorites for professional-looking broadcasts. Many more shape- and angle-based transitions may be modified by duration, border color/width, location, and direction! In Auto mode, you can select the length of each transition using the numeric keypad, but the high-grade T-bar enables you manually modify the transition speed.
The HD8 has several DVEs and transitions! Picture-in-picture graphic compositions with real-time positioning, resizing, and scaling allow for instantaneous video call adjustments. Custom shadows, lighting, 3D borders, and images make personalizing your show easy. The HD8 supports 20 HD stills and 400-frame 720HD/200-frame 1080HD motion graphics, which may be downloaded from Photoshop using the free ATEM Photoshop plug-in.
Four ATEM advanced chroma keyers provide fixed-camera virtual sets with excellent backdrop creation, flare, edge, and color matching. Use the HD8’s SuperSourcing to add four DVE layers, including live video, to your backdrop. This crucial function is normal for the HD8 and perfect for interviews, multi-view gaming, and fancy events!
Streams, recording, and smart connections
A robust hardware streaming engine in the HD8 lets your captured streams reach a worldwide audience fast and without issues. Ethernet or 4G/5G devices can broadcast to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, Twitter, Vimeo, and more. When you link your phone to the USB port, it charges and opens a new, ultra-convenient world of mobile production that matches the HD8’s mobility.
